Mario – Nintendo’s main mascot – is probably the world’s most famous plumber of all time, even if his plumbing skills are in dispute.
In 1981, Nintendo released the arcade hit Donkey Kong which featured the carpenter “Jumpman” as the hero. This Jumpman was named Mario in the next year’s Donkey Kong Jr., but didn’t become a plumber until he worked on ridding the New York sewers of monsters in 1983 with his brother, Luigi, in the arcade game Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 and launched Mario on the fast track to success. Now with the bestselling game series of all time, Mario is recognized as one of the world’s most well-known fictional characters.
Though you may not want Mario to attempt to fix your leaky faucet or install your new toilet, it is hard to dispute that the plumbing industry counts itself lucky to have him representing them in popular culture.
